Be part of something special this Christmas.

Every volunteer makes a difference.

For a long time, the Dunedin Community Christmas Dinner was a grassroots labor of love. For 25 years, Reverend David and Jean Brown hosted the annual gathering out of the St Andrew Street Church of Christ. It began as a simple, open-door invitation to ensure that anyone facing a quiet day or struggling financially had a hot meal and good company on Christmas Day.

By 2014, as demand grew well beyond what the church hall could hold, David and Jean handed over the reins. Grant and Anne Hardy, alongside John Watson from the Acts of Kindness Charitable Trust, stepped in to continue the tradition. To make room for everyone, the event moved to the Dunedin Town Hall. What started as a modest church gathering transformed into a massive city-wide celebration, bringing together hundreds of guests, heaps of local donors, and an entire army of volunteers.

Today, that same spirit carries on under the stewardship of Dunedin Christmas Charitable Trust – a charity dedicated to the Christmas Dinner. While the scale has grown from tens to hundreds of diners, the heart of the event hasn’t shifted a bit: it remains a warm, welcoming space where no one in Ōtepoti has to eat alone on Christmas Day.
